Chapelwood Squirrel Blocking Cage, 16 Inch

Pigeon Beater at last - worked for us anyway.
We were not expecting too must success from this purchase as we have tried many ways to discourage the pesky pigeons from our garden feeders which we put up for the little birds - not the flocks of rats with wings who seem to always be on our roof and plague the area, scaring off small birds and leaving their droppings all over the place.

We decided to buy a pair of these cages in which to hang our two Gardman luxury feeders.
We have 12" feeders but these cages will accommodate 16" feeders if you have them. The wire ark handle of the feeder simply slips through between two parralel wires on the top of the cage so they then simply hang from the feeder when you hang it up.

First impressions upon opening the package was my goodness these are big - look just like the old fashioned canary cages they used years ago. Second impression was that they are well made and obviously hand assembled as they are similar but not exactly the same as each other (we bought...
A partial success.
Be aware that if you hang the cage so that it can be tilted then a squirrel will do just that and cause a freely suspended feeder inside the cage to come close to the wire mesh. My squirrels did just that and were able to damge the feeder and reach the seeds. My solution was to anchor the feeder to the bottom of the cage.

Another tip is to put a plant saucer in the bottom of the cage. Birds can be messy eaters. Also allow rainwater to drain out of the saucer.

After only two days my feeder is showing slight signs of rust ... not a good omen for an item which is expected to remain outdoors and withstand squirrel teeth.

However it is a deterrent to the varmints.
IT DOES KEEP THE SQUIRRELS OUT
There are not many squirrel proof devices out there that work.
But this does.
Whoever designed this has worked out the length of a squirrels arms, because they just cannot reach the bird seed.

On the day following that I put this up,a Squirrel attempted to get at he seed.He looked glaringly down at me from above it and was twitching his bushy tail angrily, as if saying "you mean person, feed me one day and then stop the next".
Needlessly to say he scrambled all over and around it ,but alas........NO LUCK.
He then slowly went down the pole, over the lawn and into the trees.
So far,a week later,no sign of him.
A very good buy.
Thank you.
